Board Director - Shirley Turnbull

Shirley Turnbull was born in Canada after her parents had fled from Morocco to Canada. She grew up in Montreal, moved to Vancouver, spent time in Banff and made her home in Calgary. She has been working since she was eleven so that she could contribute to the family income as her mother was also a single woman raising 3 children on her own. Over the years, she worked as a hairstylist, waitress, retail sales rep, law office administrator, legal assistant, real estate and securities paralegal, and real estate agent. In 2003 she created Sugarland Developments Inc., a real estate holdings company that she operated until the flood of 2013. She is currently working on her second degree, majoring in Political Science.

She knows the challenges of being from an immigrant family and being a single mother raising two daughters. Through it all, she has always made time to give back to her community. She has been active with a number of Calgary not-for-profits including the Calgary Zoological Society, Soroptimist International of Calgary, Highbanks Society and some political organizations.

“I understand the challenges that immigrant women face in our country.  At times, it can be overwhelming for a young woman.  I have joined CIWA because it serves a very important role in our society assisting some of our country’s most vulnerable  people become full-fledged citizens.”
