Awards

Over the years, CIWA has been honoured to receive recognition for our commitment to immigrant women and their families by the community. Below is a list of awards and recognitions CIWA has received:

  • CIWA's career counsellor Fiona Fairley received the YWCA Calgary’s “She Who Dares” award in November 2017 
  • CIWA Past Board Chair, Sarah King D’Souza was honoured with the Women in Law Leadership Award (WILL award) in the category of Leadership in the Community in November 2017
  • CIWA receives The Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award in September 2017
  • CIWA was the recipient of the Clark Builders Community Foundation (CBCF) campaign “150 Ways in 150 Days”- in celebration of Canada’s 150 anniversary- as the non-profit organization of choice for the month of August 2017
  • CIWA received the ‘You Rock’ Award from the Calgary Youth Justice Society in May 2017
  • CIWA received an Appreciation Award from the Welcome Centre for our commitment and support of their programs for Syrians in April 2017
  • CIWA received two Obsidian Awards in the categories of Immigrant Community Service and Philanthropist in September 2016
  • CIWA was among the top 100 organizations to win a Business & Professional Women (BPW) Award to mark the Canadian milestone of 100 years of Women’s Suffrage in August 2016
  • CIWA received Life of Learning Award (LOLA) in the category of Learning Champion in April 2016
  • CIWA's United Way campaign received United Way's Divisional Recognition Award for Agencies in February 2016
  • CIWA received Aspen's HOPE Award for Agency Collaboration in November 2015
  • CIWA received the Council of the Federation Literacy Award for the province of Alberta in November 2014.
  • CIWA Board Chair, Amal Umar, was presented with the Heart of Calgary award in April 2014
  • CIWA was one of the recipients of the 2013 Calgary Herald Christmas Fund
  • CIWA received the Community Partner of the Year Award from Goodwill Greatness Awards in September 2013
  • CIWA’s Low Literacy Modular Employment Program was awarded the 2013 Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award.
  • Zomkey Zomkey, Pebbles in the Sand participant, won the 2010 Literacy Alberta Award of Excellence in the Student Category

  • Shokoofeh Moussavi, Settlement and Integration Department Manager, is a 2010 recipient of Canada’s Citizenship Award

  • Jennifer Bhatla, Youth Program participant, was awarded the ConocoPhillips' Youth of Distinction Volunteerism Award in May 2010

  • Linda Faulkner, Pebbles in the Sand Facilitator, was a 2010 Calgary Learns' Life of Learning Award (LOLA) recipient

  • Beba Svigir, CIWA's Executive Director, won the Woman of Vision award for July 2009 presented by Global TV Calgary

  • Michele Neider, Family Services Department Manager, received the Partnership Award at the Calgary and Area, Child and Family Services’ inaugural Awards of Excellence on November 26, 2008

  • The Girls Culture Club was recognized for their work in the community by the City of Calgary with a Spirit, Culture and Leadership award in 2008

  • CIWA was awarded the United Way of Calgary and Area’s Spirit of Gold Award in February 2008

  • Long standing CIWA volunteer Chica Ibelo was awarded a Shell Spirit of the Future Award in July 2005

  • International Women's Day, March 8, 2003 marked the first Women of the World Gala

  • The United Way of Calgary and Area awarded CIWA the 2002 Spirits of Gold Diversity Award which recognizes CIWA's outstanding contributions for work in diversity (February 2003)

  • CIWA was awarded the Calgary Chamber of Commerce 2002 Salute to Excellence" in the Public Sector category in recognition of our outstanding contribution to the Calgary

  • CIWA and the New Sudanese Community were awarded the prestigious 2002 YMCA Canada Peace Medal Award

  • Edna Sutherland, CIWA's Executive Director, received a Women of Distinction Award in 2001

  • In 2001, CIWA received the Community Vision Award of Merit from First Calgary Savings

  • Awarded the 2000 Citation for Citizenship, the only recipient in Alberta to receive this prominent award

  • Two of CIWA's staff were awarded Queen's Jubilee Medals in 2002: former Executive Director, Edna Sutherland and Volunteer Program Coordinator, Janeth Alonso

  • Settlement and Integration Manager, Shokoofeh Moussavi was awarded the 2002 Jerry P. Sellinger Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to domestic violence prevention

  • While working at CIWA, Desiree Lopez was awarded C-CALA's Life of Learning Awards (the LOLAs) 2001 for Program Designer/Director

  • In 1999, Suma Balsubramanyam, Manager of Family Services, was awarded by the Ismaili-Muslim community of Calgary in recognition of work done around marital/family counselling in settlement initiatives with the Ismaili-Muslim community

  • An external evaluation of Immigrant Serving Agencies declared CIWA as a significant organization in the Immigrant Serving Sector

  • Received recognition from Alberta Economic Development for supporting the prosperity of immigrants through our Small Business Skills Development program
