Ministerial Visit to CIWA
International Women's Day 2013
Youth participants of the Civic Engagement Program hosted a youth forum at MacEwan Conference Center at University of Calgary on February 16th, 2013. The purpose of the forum was to inspire and encourage cross-cultural awareness and understanding between immigrant and mainstream/Canadian born youth. This youth led community event consisted of interactive booths, performances and speeches from project participants. The following six community partners participated in the event - Youth Central, Mosaic Volunteers, Renfrew Educational Services, Love Letters 2 Strangers and Mount Royal University. Bollywood dancers from Soul Feel Dance, rap artist Andrae “Yung Dre” Jones and Sandra Silvia, Indian classical dancer entertained the 350 youth and parents that attended the event. Citizenship and Immigration Canada and United Nations Association in Canada – Calgary Branch funded this event.
Hello CIWA members and staff! Welcome to Board Notes, in which we will feature updates and information from CIWA’s Board of Directors.
We’ve had a busy quarter so far: working with consultant Frank Johnston to refresh our Board Governance training, learning about CIWA’s positive impact in the community, and reviewing policies. We are pleased to welcome two new members to the Board: Sherri Wright-Schwietz, who brings expertise in Human Resources, and Carlos Garcia, who has an accounting/finance background. It is also time to say a very fond farewell to two of our long-serving Board Members, Gerda Bloemraad and Donna Chin-Fatt, both of whom have promised to stay in touch. We sincerely thank Gerda and Donna for their valuable contribution to CIWA, and in particular want to recognize Gerda’s five years as our fearless leader!
CIWA is buzzing this Spring, and we’re excited about what’s in store. We hope you enjoyed International Women’s Day, which provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world and consider the challenges ahead.
