Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada
(LINC)
Is an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for immigrant women who have lived in Canada for less than three years. Childcare is provided free of charge for participants registered in day-time classes.
Pebbles in the Sand
A literacy class designed for women facing multiple barriers accessing mainstream language programs. Participants have 0-6 years of education in their home country and are not enrolled in any other ESL course.
Canadian Pronunciation
An 8-week accent reduction program for immigrant women who require better pronunciation in order to gain employment.
SMILES Childcare (Small Multicultural Immigrants Learning Early Strategies)
All CIWA programs are supported by SMILES childcare. This program promotes life-long learning and provides early childhood development. Children 0-6 years of age learn strategies that will help them succeed in the Canadian school system.
Childcare Training for Low Literacy Immigrant Women
This project is funded by Alberta Advance Education and Technology, and offered in partnership with Bow Valley College. Immigrant and refugee women with 0-7 years of education in their home country will earn a certificate in Childcare. The project involves classroom instruction and mentored, paid work experience placements.
Advanced Training for Immigrant Women Seeking Employment as ESL Assistants
A full-time, 24-week, intensive training project designed to increase the number of immigrant women employed as ESL assistants by the Calgary Board of Education, the Calgary Roman Catholic Separate School District, and surrounding boards. The project will provide immigrant women with hands-on Canadian classroom experience, paid ESL assistant training at Chinook Learning Centre, and enhanced language training. A living allowance and childcare subsidies are available to those who qualify. Our goal is to successfully integrate 24-30 integrate 24-30 internationally trained human service professionals and educators into the Canadian school system. There will be two intakes: January and June 2008.
Bridging the Gap for Foreign Trained Accountants
This pilot project funded by Alberta Employment and Immigration is a full-time enhanced language training project. Two intakes of immigrant women with foreign accounting degrees participate in 14 weeks of full-time classes that include: enhanced language training, Canadian accounting practices, Canadian accounting software, and how to obtain professional designation. Upon completion of the classroom portion, students are placed in 10-week work placements. To participate in this project, please click HERE.
